Objective
There are a number of environmentally relevant analytes which are difficult to analyse by conventional means. Amongst these are the priority metabolites CIAT, CDET and CAAT.
These are a particular concern because of their high water solubility and their consequent transport through pore and groundwaters to surface and sea waters. This proposal outlines a biosensor approach to the analysis of these chemicals using an optoelectronic sensor platform which is constructed using silicon manufacturing technology.
The sensor will be based on interferometry. Two approcahes are to be used for the construction of the receptor layers. Recombinant antibody techniques will be coupled to computer modelling to produce antibody fragments which are suitable for the detection and quantitation of the target analytes. In parallel with this, molecular receptors will be designed using computer modelling techniques and combinatorial synthesis. These receptors will be deposited on the sensor using printing technologies such as inkjet printing. Multivariate analysis software will be developed for use in a biosensor array. The working prototype device will be incorporated into a simple test rig for evaluation.
