Objective
The objective of the Research and Development project is to design a large scale forest fire early detection system which does not rely on infra-red large-scale sensor systems can be produced and made available to the market. radiation temperature may rise). Our proposal aims at analyzing the applicability of highly sensitive photon sensors coupled to millimeter wave radars to detect forest fires. The mmW radr acts as the coarse tool for locating potential forest fires, and the sensors act as the finely tuned tools which characterize the forest fire. The sensors basically consist of a free-air travelling laser laser beam and a calibrated laser beam travelling through a fiber-optic cable. The free-air travelling beam and the fiber-optic travelling beam are correlated at the emitter, while at the receiver a comparaison of the properties of both beams is performed automatically. Since a laser beam traversing a cloud of smoke emanating from burning trees modifies its optical parameters in a unique manner, any modification of the free-travelling beam parameters, as compared with those of the beam travelling through the fiber optic, will characterize a fire. The research project intends to prove the efficiency of the proposed solution by designing and developing a pilot-scale sensor system prototype. Once the application of these techniques are successfully demonstrated, from the technical and economical viewpoints, large-scale sensor systems can be produced and made available to the market.
