Exploitation of GERB for climate and meteorological applications

Objective

The objective of this proposal is to carry out a Pilot Project in which members of the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) experiment development team, plus a number of collaborating user organisations, work together to identify requirements for the exciting new data to be produced by GERB to meet user needs, and identify an implementation plan leading to the establishment of a pre-operational system capable of delivering the required data products to these users. This will be accomplished by enhancing the data processing chain for GERB so as to deliver processed data to the users within three hours of collection. The users will incorporate the data into existing models to improve the models of climate change and to study the effect on the ability to make improved medium range weather forecasts. The project will provide new data of importance to a number of international programmes such as GEWEX, BALTEX, WCRP and GCOS.
The project will also serve to reinforce the REFIR project study currently being supported by the EU.
