LiC Batteries Recycling Program

Objective

The overall objective is to define a Recycling Process related to the Lithium-Carbon/Liquid Electrolyte battery system for the use as a traction battery in Electric Vehicles (EV).

Prototypes of complete LiC battery systems are under development : this project was started in 1996, will last until 1998 and is handled under the EC contract number JOE3-CT95-0012.

As the Li/C battery development enters a crucial phase, it is mandatory to look at the Recycling issue : in order to be acceptable by the market, the Li-C battery system must be recycled at a reasonable cost.

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the possibility of recycling the Li/C batteries : all constituents must be treated without causing any damage to the environment.

The way of operating will be as follow :

* identification of recycling processes for each component,
* listing of the different possible scenarios,
* choice of the solution leading to the optimal re-use of the products, * respect of environmental norms and regulations,
* proof of economical interest of the project.

This program will demonstrate that an Electric Vehicle is to be considered as a Non Polluting Vehicle during its life cycle : it will be a key point to open the EV market.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
