A consumer-friendly dosimeter for assessment of health risks resulting from the increase of UV radiation over the northern hemisphere

Objective

The levels of UV radiation have increased significantly over the past years as a result of the decrease of the Ozon layer, not only over the Southern, but in recent years also over the Northern Hemisphere. The concern about the health risks related to UV is growing among the general public. Much scientific information on UV radiation and its effects has become available in recent years. However, data on the annual UV dose received by an average human at Northern Hemisphere, is quite limited. Instruments and methods for the determination of the annual UV dose are available at scientific level, but practicals tools to be used by the consumer, for the assessment of its personal health risks, are not available. A limited number of UV B meters, specifically developed for use by the general public, is available, however, all instruments are based on instantaneous measurement of UV radiation. Tools for the assessment of own's annual UV dose are virtually not available. The objective of the Project is to develop a method and instrument for UVdosimetry suitable for use by the general public. The project is executed by a consortium of companies from The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Research will be done by Institutes in Germany, The Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
