Manganese rocovery from mining tailings through waste disposal

Objective

Large quantities of tailings remain in the manganese mining industry, after mining and ore dressing. They still contain substantial amounts of manganese (12 to 15%), which could not be exploited economically until now. A novel innovative and low cost method has been proposed by Prof. dr R.D. Schuiling to recover manganese by utilizing (waste) acids and sewage sludge. The innovative step in the proposed research is the mobilization by reduction that creates a method that utilizes wastes, sewage sludge (or other organic sludges) and (industrial waste) acids, in order to recover manganese from its tailings, which is not profitably possible with the present techniques. This method can be applied in situ as well as ex situ (i.e. in a reactor). After extracting the manganese from the tailings, the treated tailings can be utilized as a subsoil, and vast stretches of land (former tailings disposal area) will become available again for other uses. The process enables mining companies to consider their tailings as a secondary ore reserve instead of a waste problem. This could revive a lot of idle small scale European manganese mining companies and provides a marketable method for low cost tailings treatment.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
