New chemicals to eliminate solvents use in degreasing skins

Objective

The tanning of goat/sheep hides with hair or hides for furs requires the degrea sing of the hides by washing with solvents in industrial washing machines. This practice requires the treatment of the residues with suitable highly expensive removal techniques. The purpose of the research project is to completely repla ce the chlorinated organic solvents used to degrease hides with a new class of chemical products, characterized both by their ability to grease and degrease h ides effectively and by a high degree of eco compatibility. The partnership exp ects to achieve the following objectives: * eliminate organic solvents in the degreasing of goat/sheep hides and hides for furs and eliminate the cost curre ntly sustained for solvents treatment; * simplify the processing cycle for go at/sheep hides and hides for furs with an improvement in efficiency that will p ermit a 3 to 5% reduction in industrial costs; * formulate new chemical produ cts able to grease and degrease skins with a high degree of eco-compatibility, with market expansion of 20 30%; * greatly improve the working environment; * improve relations with the local community and the public administration, esp ecially for tanneries located within industrial districts; * intensify the te chnological co-operation between companies in the leather chain and between the m and the research institutes (universities and industry R & D centres); * im prove the environmental performance of the tanning industry and adjust in advan ce to environmental standards. The plan is to differentiate the research on goat/sheep hide production from that for fur hides. Regarding goat/sheep hides, new surfactants with high degreasing power will be formulated. The chemical re search will concentrate on studies to synthesize new molecules, starting from p urely natural bases, so as to ensure total respect for the environment. The new surfactants thus formulated must have a greater degreasing capacity than the c urrent ones, so as to obviate the dry cleaning phase with solvents. Regarding f urs, the pivotal point of the proposed research is a switch from dry greasing t o water bath greasing. The line of chemical research will focus, in fact, on th e formulation of new families of greasers that can be applied for the furs in a water phase. This change, never successfully attempted in the past, will make it possible to effect the successive degreasing phase in water and thus to use surfactants and eliminate dry cleaning with solvents. It may be necessary to mo dify the preceding stages of the production cycle so as to make hide treatment in water phase possible. In addition to determining the industrial applicabilit y of the chemical products, the tanning phase will permit an initial evaluation of the cost of the new process versus the traditional process, due to the chan ges necessary in the production cycle, the changes in the consumption of electr ic power, water, manpower, etc.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
