High temperature thermal energy storage in saturated sans layers with vertical heat exchangers ('TESSAS')

Objective

When energy supply and demand is not balanced, storage is necessary. The duration of storage is a parameter of prime importance for energy stores. Short-term thermal energy storage (a few hours to several days) is a common technique but only long-term storage will save energy. Different mediums can be used such as soil and water bearing layers (Underground Thermal Energy Storage-UTES). Goal of the project is the demonstration on a real scale (600 mwh of store) of thermal energy storage in the underground at a temperature between 40°C and maximum 85°C with VHEs (Vertical Heat Exchangers) placed into soil, composed of water-saturated sand layers. The project store will be exploited under realistic conditions (stand -alone situation).
