DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF THE HABITAT OF LITTLE BUSTARDS POPULATION (OTIS TETRAX)

Objective

PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED SPECIES LISTED IN ANNEX 1 OF THE COUNCIL DIRECTIVE ON PROTECTION OF BIRDS.

THE LITTLE BUSTARD (OTIS TETRAX) IS LARGELY DISTRIBUTED IN FRANCE AND OCCUPIES THE WHOLE OF THE CULTIVATED AND CALCAREOUS PLAINS OF THE CENTRE OF THE COUNTRY (10 % OF THE AREA). THE NESTING MALES DENSITY VARIES IN THOSE REGIONS FROM 1 PER 10 KM2 TO 1 PER 1 KM2.

THE PRELIMINARIES WORKS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO PERFECT AN ABSOLUTE METHODOLOGY OF NESTING EFFECTIVES CENSUS ON "QUADRATS" OF A VERY LARGE SURFACE (20 TO 40 KM2). THIS METHOD HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING REPRODUCIBLE ON DIFFERENT AREAS WHERE THE SPECIES LIVES.

THEREFORE, THE OBJECT OF THE RESEARCH IS:

1) TO RECORD THE BIRDS DURING THE SPRING 1982 AND 1983 IN FRANCE AND ITALY IN NATURAL ENTIRETIES REPRESENTATIVE OF PLACES WHERE THE SPECIES LIVES AND WHERE THEY HAVE ALREADY BEEN STUDIED TO SPECIFY THE DISTRIBUTION AND THE DENSITY OF NESTING POPULATION IN FRANCE AND ITALY;

2) TO COMPARE THE NESTING EFFECTIVES BETWEEN 1978/1983 IN FRANCE AND THEREFORE TO GIVE AND EXACT IDEA OF THE POPULATIONS FLUCTUATIONS ON THE ALREADY STUDIED REGIONS (BEAUCE, CHAMPAGNE, POITOU, CAUSSES, CRAU);

3) TO MAKE THE SURVEYS OF AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES ON SAMPLING AREAS OF "QUADRATS"TO SPECIFY WHICH ARE THE FARMING WAYS FAVOURABLE TO THE BUSTARD AND SIZE THE PROBLEM OF MAXIMUM RESTING CAPACITY OF THE AGRICULTURAL ENVIRONMENT;

4) TO DEDUCT OF THOSE DIFFERENT CHAPTERS APPROPRIATE PRESERVATION MEASURES:

- TO THE SPECIES AND ITS BIOLOGY,

- TO THE NESTING AREAS LAND STATUS,

- TO THE LEGISLATIVE MAENS OF THE CONCERNED STATES.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
