Objective
TO DETERMINE IF IMPULSIVE NOISES AND TRAFFIC NOISE PRODUCE DIFFERENT PSYCHOLOGICAL REACTIONS BY PERSONS, EXPOSED TO THESE NOISE SOURCES.
FIVE CEC LABORATORIES (FROM D, F, IRL, NL) JOINTLY CARRY OUT SOCIAL SURVEYS, QUESTIONING ABOUT 500 PERSONS IN EACH COUNTRY LIVING IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF IMPULSIVE NOISE SOURCES (F.E. PILE DRIVERS, SHOOTING RANGES, SHIPYARDS, SHUNTING YARDS ...) AND EXPOSED ALSO TO TRAFFIC NOISE AT DIFFERENT DISTANCES FROM SOURCES. NOISE LEVELS ARE RECORDED FOR LABORATORY ANALYSIS AND QUESTIONNAIRES COMPLETED FOR ASSESSING PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS, DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL NUISANCES INCLUDING NOISES. THE REACTIONS TO IMPULSIVE NOISES ARE COMPARED TO THOSE TO TRAFFIC NOISE, THE COMMON YARDSTICK.
NOISE RECORDS AND QUESTIONNAIRES ARE ESTABLISHED FOR COMPARING RESULTS CORRESPONDING TO DIFFERENT IMPULSIVE NOISE SOURCES AND DIFFERENT REGIONS.
IN PARALLEL WITH THIS FIELD STUDIES, OTHER RESEARCH TEAMS ASSESS THE ANNOYANCE RATED BY PERSONS LISTENING IN LABORATORY TO A VARIETY OF IMPULSIVE NOISE RECORDS, REPRODUCED AT FIXED SOUND LEVELS.
