THE MOUNT SAINT-MICHEL BAY: RESEARCH ON THE NATURAL ECOSYSTEM AND ITS COMPONENTS, ON THE CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES OF HUMAN ACTIVITY

Objective

TO INVESTIGATE AN ECOSYSTEM STUDY OF A BAY UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF INTENSIVE HUMAN ACTIVITY.

THIS BASE-LINE ECOSYSTEMSTUDY ON THE MOUNT SAINT-MICHEL BAY IS AIMED TO DEVELOPA MANAGEMENT MODEL WHICH WILL BE EXTENDABLE TO OTHER WADDEN SEA ECOSYSTEMS. TO FULFILL THIS OBJECTIVE THE PROGRAMME COMPRISE MAINLY THE FOLLOWING PARTS:

- SYNTHESIS OF RESEARCH RESULTS ALREADY AVAILABLE FOR VARIOUS ECOSYSTEM PARTS;

- DESCRIPTION OF SPECIES AND MEASUREMENT OF BIOMASS DEVELOPMENT IN THE WATER COLUMN (PHYTOPLANKTON, ZOOPLANKTON AND BACTERIES);

- ASSESSMENT OF THE PRIMARY PRODUCTION OF HALOPHYTES, OF THE DISPONIBILITY OF ORGANIC MATTER AND THE DECOMPOSER ACTIVITY IN THE "SCHORRE";- TRANSPORT OF ORGANIC MATTER IN RELATION TO WATER MOVEMENT;

- ASSESSMENT OF EFFECTS OF THE VARIOUS HUMAN ACTIVITIES ON THE FUNCTIONING OF THE BAY ECOSYSTEM.
