IMPACT OF ACID ATMOSPHERIC DEPOSITION ON ALIGOSTROPHIC ECOSYSTEMS

Objetivo

TO INCREASE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTS OF ACID ATMOSPHERIC INPUTS ON THE CHEMISTRY OF SOILS AND SURFACE WATERS, AND TO ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ABIOTIC AND BIOTIC FACTORS, WITH EMPHASISE ON VEGETATIONS AND DIATOMS.

THE PROJECT INVOLVES:

1) THE MONITORING OF THE FLUXES OF MAJOR ELEMENTS IN RAIN, THROUGHFALL, STEMFLOW, SOIL SOLUTION GROUNDWATER AND SURFACE WATER IN FOREST - SOIL - MOORLAND POOL ECOSYSTEMS AT FOUR SITES IN THE NETHERLANDS, AND MONITORING DIATOMSAT THREE OF THOSE SITES;

2) A SURVEY OF THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND DIATOM POPULATION IN ACID SENSITIVE SURFACE WATERS IN VARIOUS PARTS OF WESTERN EUROPE,AND

3) A SURVEY OF VEGETATIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS, IN RELATION TO ACID DEPOSITION, BY STUYING RELEVES OF VEGETATION IN AREAS WITH SIMILAR GEOLOGY, HYDROLOGY AND FOREST AGE, BUT WITH DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF ACID ATMOSPHERIC DEPOSITION.
