Objectif ASSESSMENT OF THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF DIFFERENT PATWAYS OF DENITRIFICATION IN FRESH WATER. EXTENSION OF A FURTHER RESEARCH PROJECT SUBMITTED BY THE EEC (287-77-1 ENV-UK) ABOUT NITROGEN CYCLING, PARTICULARLY THE FATE OF NITRATE IN FRESH WATERS. THE EXTENSION IS CONCERNED WITH THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF N2 GAS AND NH4 AS END PRODUCTS OF NITRATE METABOLISM. CLEARLY THE CONVERSION OF NO3 TO N2 GAS RESULTS IN A LOSS OF ENERGY FROM THE SYSTEM BUT MAY BE DESIRABLE IN THAT IT REMOVES A POTENTIALLY TOXIC SUBSTANCE. CONVERSION TO NH4 LEAVES THE NITROGEN WITHIN THE SYSTEM AND IN A STATE WHERE IT MAY CONVERTED BACK TO NO3 BY MICRO-ORGANISMS. THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF THESE PATWAYS CAN NOT BE DETERMINED UNTIL ALL SOURCES OF NH4 ARE ESTABLISHED. THEREFORE THIS PROJECT IS CONCENTRATED ON THE PROCESSES BY WHICH NH4 IS GENERATED AND ITS ULTIMATE FATE IN OXYGENATED AND ANOXIC WATERS.
