A SMALL-SCALE SURVEY OF THE CONCENTRATIONS OF PHTHALATE ESTERS IN FISHAND SHELLFISH FROM SITES IN THE UK

Objective

TO DEVELOP ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PHTHALATE ESTERS AND TO DETERMINE PHTHALATES IN FISH AND SHELLFISH FROM "HIGH-RISK" AREAS.

1. PHTHALATE ESTERS MAY BE SEPARATED FOLLOWING EXTRACTION BY GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY. DETECTION MAY BE EFFECTED BY FLAME IONISATION OR ELECTRON CAPTURE DETECTION,ALTHOUGH NEITHER OF THESE ARE BY ANY MEANS SPECIFIC. IT IS PROPOSED THEREFORE TO DEVELOP ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR A RANGE OF COMMON PHTHALATE ESTERS RANGING FROM DIMETHYL TO DI (ETHYL-HEXYL) PHTHALATE BASED ON GC/MS MASS FRAGMENTOGRAPHIC DETECTION USING M/E VALUES 149 AND 163. SOXHLET EXTRACTION OF TISSUE WILL BE USED. IT IS ENVISAGED THAT SEVERE PROBLEMS WITH BLANKS WILL HAVE TO BE OVERCOME, BUT THIS IS NOT FELT TO BE IMPOSSIBLE.

2. TO DETERMINE CONCENTRATIONS OF THESE PHTHALATES IN SAMPLES OF FISH AND SHELLFISH (BOTH COMMERCIAL AND NON-COMMERCIAL SPECIES) FROM "HIGH-RISK" AREAS. THE NON-COMMERCIAL SPECIES WOULD BE THOSE MOST LIKELY TO ACCUMULATE PHTHALATES. IF POSSIBLE, WATER AND SEDIMENTS FROM THESE AREAS WOULD ALSO BE ANALYSED IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEVELS IN THE THREE SAMPLE TYPES.
