Objective
TO QUANTIFY YIELD REDUCTION ON A NUMBER OF PLANTS OF ECONOMICAL IMPORTANCE EXPOSED DURING THE WHOLE GROWING SEASON TO LOW CONCENTRATIONS OF SO2 AND NO2.
AN EXPERIMENTAL FUMIGATION SET UP ALLOWS TO EXPOSE ANNUAL PLANTS IN THE FIELD TO A DETERMINED CONCENTRATION OF SO2 OR NO2 FOR THE WHOLE GROWING SEASON.
THE PLANTS TO BE EXPOSED ARE WHEAT, BEANS, AND COLZA. THEY WILL BE SOWN AND GROWN IN DIFFERENT PLOTS RANDOMLY DISTRIBUTED IN THE EXPERIMENTAL FIELD, OVER WHICH THE FUMIGATION SYSTEM WILL MAINTAIN A CONSTANT CONCENTRATION OF SO2 DURING ONE SEASON, AND NO2 ON ANOTHER GROWING SEASON. THE CONCENTRATION VALUES WILL BE SIMILAR TO THOSE ENCOUNTERED ON AVERAGE, 50 UG.M-3 FOR SO2,20 TO 39 UG.M-3 FOR NO2., DURING THE GROWING SEASON IN THAT REGION.
ALL OTHER CONDITIONS BEING EQUAL FOR THE DIFFERENT PLOTS, IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO COMPARE THE YIELDS OF THE VARIOUS PARTS OF THE PLANTS (STRAW, SEEDS, FRUITS) BY HARVESTING A FRACTION OF THE PLOTS AT REGULAR INTERVALS DURING THE SEASON.
CORRELATIONS WITH THE CONCENTRATION EXPOSURE TO AIR POLLUTANTS WILL BE MADE.
