Objetivo ASSESSMENT OF ACID PRECIPITATION EFFECTS IN LAKES. THE HYPOTHESIS WILL BE TESTED THAT IF ACID PRECIPITATION IS SERIOUSLY EFFECTING SCOTTISH LOCHS THEN FISH POPULATIONS (AS TERMINAL PREDATORS IN FRESHWATER LAKES) WILL HAVE CHANGED OR EVEN DISAPPEARED FROM UNBUFFERED SYSTEMS, BUT REMAIN MUCH THE SAME IN BUFFERED ONES, COMPARED TO HISTORIC RECORDS. THUS THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMME WILL BE EXECUTED: 1. SELECTION, BY MEANS OF A DESK STUDY OF TOPOGRAPHICAL, GEOLOGICAL AND PRECIPITATION MAPS, OF SUITABLE SETS OF LAKES IN ADJACENT UNBUFFERED AND BUFFERED AREAS OF SCOTLAND. THE CATCHMENTS OF THESE LAKES WILL BE CLASSIFIED TO LAND USE. 2. COLLECTION OF INFORMATION ON THE HISTORICAL STATUS OF THE FISH POPULATIONS OF THESE WATERS FROM THE PUBLISHED LITERATURE, ESTATE RECORDS, ANGLERS, ETC. 3. SAMPLING OF PRESENT-DAY FISH POPULATIONS IN THE LAKES, THEIR INFLOWS AND OUTFLOWS USING CONVENTIONAL FISHERY METHODS. SAMPLING OF LITTORAL MACROPHYTES AND ZOOPLANKTON, AND MEASUREMENT OF THE BACKGROUND WATER CHEMISTRY OF THE LAKES (PH, HEAVY METALS ETC.).
