RATE AND MECHANISM OF ACTION OF ATMOSPHERIC SO2 ON LIMESTONE AND MARBLES

Objective

TO INVESTIGATE THE MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF SO2 ON LIMESTONE AND MARBLE.

A NEW TECHNIQUE TO STUDY THE RATES OF VARIOUS SLOW PROCESSES, TERMED "REVERSED-FLOW GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY" HAS RECENTLY BEEN DEVELOPED. AS A VERY SENSITIVE SAMPLING TECHNIQUE, THIS METHOD CAN BE USED WITH ADVANTAGE TO STUDY THE RATE OF ACTION OF GASEOUS MIXTURE CONTAINING SO2 ON CACO3.

IN THE EXPERIMENTAL SET-UP VARIOUS FORMS OF CACO3 WILL BE USED, SUCH AS POWDER, GRANULES AND SMALL PIECES OF MARBLES. THE SOLID WILL BE FED WITH SO2 BY DIFFUSION FROM A REMOTE POINT OF SAMPLE INJECTION. THIS METHOD OF BRINGING THE REACTANTS INTO CONTACT IS CLOSER TO REAL PHYSICAL SITUATIONS OF SO2 ACTION ON MONUMENTS, RATHER THAN PASSING A CONTINUOUS STREAM OF SO2- CONTAINING GAS OVER THE SOLID. GASEOUS MIXTURES OF VARYING COMPOSITION AND SO2 CONTENT WILL BE TESTED, AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES. FROM THE WHOLE STUDY, INFORMATION CONCERNING THE MECHANISMS OF THE PROCESS AND THE RATE DETERMINING STEPS CAN BE INFERRED.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
