EXAMINATION OF APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR ASBESTOS TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL

Objetivo

THE FINAL AIM OF THE PROJECT WILL BE TO SELECT ONE OR MORE PROMISING AND WIDELY APPLICABLE TREATMENT TECHNIQUES AND TO EXAMINE THE PROPORTION OF CROCIDOLITE, CHRYSOTILE AND AMOSITE DESTROYED BY THIS METHOD, USING ASBESTOS FIBRE WASTE SAMPLES.

THE FINAL AIM OF THE PROGRAMME WILL BE TO IDENTIFY THE MAJOR COMPONENTS OF LANDFILL LEACHATE WHICH ARE RESONSIBLE FOR ANY DECOMPOSITION OBSERVED IN EACH ASBESTOS TYPE.

A. DESCRIPTION: THE PROPOSED RESEARCH PROGRAMME CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO AREAS:-

(1) A VARIETY OF ACID WASTE MATERIALS WILL BE REACTED WITH STANDARD SAMPLES OF CHRYSOTILE, CROCIDOLITE AND AMOSITE, AND SUBSEQUENTLY WITH ASBESTOS WASTES, UNDER A VARIETY OF EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS. THE EXPERIMENTAL PARAMETERS EXAMINED WILL INCLUDE ACID STRENGTH, ACID TYPE, TEMPERATURE, THE APPLICATION OF SURFACTANTS OR DISPERSANTS, REACTION TIMES AND OPTIMUM FIBRE: FLUID RATIOS. SIMILARLY HEAT TREATMENT OF ASBESTOS, EITHER FRESH OR AFTER ACID TREATMENT, WILL BE CARRIED OUT.

THE EFFICIENCY OF DEGRADATION WILL BE JUDGED FROM CHEMICAL DATA, SUCH AS MAGNESIUM LOSS THROUGH LEACHING OF CHRYSOTILE, AND FROM PHYSICAL DATA SUCH AS WEIGHT CHANGES AND FIBRE COUNTS AND VISUAL CHARACTERISTICS.

THE POTENTIAL DEGRADATION ACHIEVABLE BY THE INTRODUCTION OF ASBESTOS INTO SOLID FUEL BOILERS OR CEMENT KILNS WILL BE ASSESSED AT A LABORATORY LEVEL.

(2) SAMPLES OF LANDFILL LEACHATE COVERING A RANGE OF CARBOXYLIC ACID STRENGTHS AND ORGANIC LOADINGS WILL BE COLLECTED AND ANALYSED TO DETERMINE THEIR COMPOSITION. IN ADDITION, SAMPLES OF "MODEL" LEACHATE WILL BE PREPARED USING LABORATORY REAGENT CARBOXYLIC ACIDS IN ORDER THAT THE EFFECTS OF INDIVIDUAL CARBOXYLIC ACIDS ON ASBESTOS CAN BE QUANTIFIED.

A LABORATORY PROGRAMME WILL THEN EXAMINE ANY DECOMPOSITION OF ASBESTOS WHEN EXPOSED TO LANDFILL LEACHATE AND TO PREPARED SOLUTIONS OF CARBOXILIC ACIDS. EXPERIMENTAL PARAMETERS SUCH AS TEMPERATURE, REACTION TIMES, FIBRE: FLUID AND CARBOXYLIC ACID CONCENTRATIONS WILL BE ASSESSED AND OPTIMUM CONDITIONS FOR ASBESTOS ATTACK DEFINED.
