Objective
THE ENGINEERING SEISMOLOGY AND EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING SECTION AT IMPERIAL COLLEGE IN COOPERATION WITH ENEA/ENEL (ROME) AND CEA/IPSN (PARIS) HAS RECENTLY ESTABLISHED THE FRAMEWORK FOR A EUROPEAN RESEARCH NETWORK FOR THE ACQUISITION AND PROCESSING OF HIGH QUALITY STRONG-MOTION INFORMATION FOR RESEARCH AND SPECIAL STUDIES.
THE AIM OF THE PRESENT PROJECT IS TO MAKE THIS INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO THE PRACTISING ENGINEER FOR DESIGN PURPOSES, TO PROVIDE SEISMOLOGISTS WITH STRONG-MOTION DATA FOR EARTHQUAKE HAZARD STUDIES, AND SUPPLY TESTING LABORATORIES WITH APPROPRIATE INPUT MOTIONS FOR MODEL AND FULL-SCALE TESTING IN EUROPE.
THE PRESENT PROJECT WILL ALSO PROVIDE INTRODUCTORY INSTRUCTION AND TRAINING OF POTENTIAL USERS IN THE FORM OF SHORT COURSES AND VISITING ENGINEERS.
A DISSEMINATION CENTRE FOR STRONG-MOTION DATA WILL BE ESTABLISHED FOR THE DURATION OF THE PROJECT.
THE ACQUISITION, PROCESSING AND THE TRANSFER OF STRONG-MOTION DATA BETWEEN VARIOUS EUROPEAN CENTRES AND USERS WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY A FULL-TIME ANALYST AND A PROGRAMMER/OPERATOR.
