Objective
TWO NEW BORINGS ARE PROPOSED HERE. THEY WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN SOUTHERN ITALY, IN HINTERLAND BASINS AT TH FOOT OF THE APENNINES IN CAMPANIA AND BASILICATA, TO RECONSTRUCT THE VEGETATIONAL AND CLIMATIC HISTORY OF THESE REGIONS.
RECONSTRUCTION OF THE VEGETATIONAL AND CLIMATIC CHANGES, STILL FRAGMENTARILY KNOWN, IN THESE REGIONS, WILL BE UNDERTAKEN.
AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO RECOGNISE PARAMETERS USEFUL TO RECONSTRUCT THE TREND OF CLIMATIC CHANGES COMPARING FOSSIL AND PRESENT VEGETATION OF THE REGIONS.
TO LOCATE THE TWO PROPOSED BORINGS A SERIES OF SUPERFICIAL TESTS WILL BE DONE WITH A HAND-OPERATED CORE SAMPLER, AS ALREADY EXPERIMENTED TO FIND OUT SITES RICH OF POLLEN FAVOURABLE FOR DEEP BORINGS IN CENTRAL ITALY (CASTIGLIONE AND FUCINO).
THE DRAWN SAMPLES WILL FURNISH, THROUGH LABORATORY ANALYSIS, THE POSSIBILITY OF RECOGNIZING USEFUL LOCATIONS FOR DEEP BORINGS. THE PRESENT VEGETATION OF THE AREA OF THE CATCHMENT BASIN WILL BE SURVEYED AND THE STABILIZATION OF THE EXTANT VEGETATION ESTIMATED IN RELATION TO THE PRESENT CLIMATE, WHICH THE AIM TO INVESTIGATE RECENT CLIMATIC FLUCTUATIONS.
AFTER THE BORINGS, CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL LABORATORY TREATMENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO CONCENTRATE THE POLLEN CONTENTS OF THE SAMPLES, ACCORDING TO BERGLUND METHODS. 14C DATINGS WILL BE PERFORMED.
THE POLLEN OF THE SAMPLES WILL BE IDENTIFIED AND COUNTED IN STRATIGRAPHIC SEQUENCE AT A LIGHT MICROSCOPE.
POLLEN DIAGRAMS ELABORATED BY COMPUTER ACCORDING TO METHODS COMPARABLE WITH THOSE OF OTHER STRATIGRAPHIC SERIES WILL CONSTITUTE THE MAIN OBJECT OF VEGETATIONAL AND CLIMATIC INTERPRETATION.
BY COMPARING MORE POLLEN DIAGRAMS IT WILL BE ATTEMPTED TO ELABORATE THE CLIMATIC MODELS.
