Application of weather radar for the alleviation of climatic hazards

Objective



THE RESEARSH WORK WILL COMPRISE THREE MAIN POINTS.

THE FIRST ONE CONCERNS THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INTENSITY OF PRECIPITATION AND RADAR REFLECTIVITY. THE AIM IS THAT OF IMPROVING THE ESTIMATES OF PRECIPITATION AS MEASURED BY METEOROLOGICAL RADAR.

THE SECOND POINT WILL DEAL WITH FLOOD FORECASTING IN THE AREA OF RIVER TAGUS ESTUARY (LISBON). THE WORK WILL LATER BE EXTENDED TO RIVERS DOURO AND SADO.

THE THIRD PART AIMS AT ESTABLISHED A FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM FOR THE WESTERN PART OF THE URBAN AREA OF LISBON.IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THAT, A COMBINATION OF RADAR AND HYDROMETRIC INFORMATION WILL BE USED.
