DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKES AND TSUNAMIS WARNING SYSTEM

Objective

THE TECTONIC ACTIVITY OF THE AZORES-GIBRALTAR FAULT INDUCES A STRONG SEISMICITY IN THE SOUTHERN MOST PART OF THE IBERIAN PENINSULA AND IN THE SURROUNDING OCEANIC AREA.

EXAMPLES OF SUCH A SEISMICITY ARE THE THREE MOST DESTRUCTIVE EVENTS (1356,1755,1969) WHOSE EPICENTRES WERE LOCATED NEAR THE ABOVE MENTIONED FAULT, AND THE TSUNAMI GENERATED BY THE 1755 EVENTS.
THAT TSUNAMI RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GREATEST PART OF CASUALTIES IN PORTUGAL AND NEIGHBOUR IN 8 ZONES.

THE LOW MAGNETUDE EVENTS OCCURING IN THE FOCAL AREA ARE NOT RECORDED BY THE DISTANT AND INLAND NETWORK INSTALLED, DIMINISHING AS A CONSEQUENCE THE CAPABILITY OF THE SOUTHERN PORTUGUESE NETWORK TO PROVIDE DATE FOR THE MODELLING OF THOSE STRUCTURAL SEISMOGENETIC ZONES AND THE ACCURACY OF THE SEISMIC RISK ASSESSMENT.

THE PRESENT PROJECT CONCERNS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SOUTHERN PORTUGUESE SEISMOGRAPHIC NETWORK IN SUCH A WAY AS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY AND USEFULNESS OF THE DATA. TWO SEIMOGRAPHIC STATIONS IN TWO UNDERSEA MOUNTAINS ON GORRINGE BANK WILL ALSO BE INSTALLED.

MOREOVER, WITH THE INSTALLATION OF STATIONS AT BEJA, FOIA, CALDERAO,(GORRINGE BANK), CONNECTED TO THE S. TEOTONIO 17-STATIONS ARRAY, A GREAT DEAL OF DATA, CONCERNING EVENTS OCCURING NO FARTHER THEN 100/150 KM EVEN OF LOW MAGNITUDE, WILL BE AVAILABLE.

ON THE OTHER HAND, THE TWO NEW STATIONS AT ORMONDE AND GETTYSBURG (GORRINGE BANK).

ALL THESE STATIONS MAY SERVE AS A WARNING SYSTEM FOR NEW EARTHQUAKES AND THE TSUNAMIS INDUCED .
