MODELLING CHANGES IN CLIMATE DUE TO ENHANCED CO2 : THE ROLE OF ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS, CLOUDS, MOISTURE

Objective

TO ENHANCE OUR KNOWLEDGE OF DYNAMICAL RESPONSE OF THE ATMOSPHERE IN WESTERN EUROPE.

THE REPRESENTATION OF CLOUD AND CLOUD-CLIMATE FEEDBACKS IN NUMERICAL MODELS WILL BE IMPROVED. THIS IS TO BE ACHIEVED BY PARAMETRIZING CLOUDS AS A FUNCTION OF SIMULATED TOTAL WATER (VAPOUR + CLOUD), AS OPPOSED TO RELATIVE HUMIDITY, AS AT PRESENT, AND PARAMETRIZING CLOUD OPTICAL PROPERTIES AS A FUNCTION OF CLOUD WATER, AS OPPOSED TO PRESCRIBING THEM AS AT PRESENT. THIS WORK SHOULD REDUCE THE UNCERTAINTY IN CURRENT ESTIMATES OF THE SENSITIVITY OF CLIMATE TO ENHANCED CO2. A REALISTIC SIMULATION OF CLOUD COVER IS ALSO ESSENTIAL FOR THE SIMULATION OF REGIONAL CLIMATE, IN PARTICULAR THE ESTIMATION OF NEAR SURFACE RADIATION, EVAPORATION AND MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM SURFACE TEMPERATURE.

THE DYNAMICAL RESPONSE OF THE ATMOSPHERE TO GLOBAL SCALE WARMING WILL BE INVESTIGATED. EXPERIMENTS USING IDEALIZED MODELS WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO THE DYNAMICAL RESPONSE TO INCREASING ATMOSPHERIC MOISTURE, AND THE RESULTS WILL BE USED TO HELP ANALYSE THE INTEGRATION OF CO2 EXPERIMENTS MADE USING NUMERICAL MODELS OF CLIMATE.
SIMULATIONS WITH ENHANCED CO2 WILL BE MADE WITH VARIOUS MODELS. THE RESPONSES OF THE MET OFFICE AND LMD MODELS TO ENHANCED CO2 WILL BE COMPARED.THE EMPHASIS WILL BE ON UNDERSTANDING THE MODELS' RESPONSES AND EXPLAINING THE DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN THE MODELS.SEVERAL SIMULATION EXPERIMENTS CORRESPONDING TO THE EXPECTED CO2 CHANGES WILL BE PERFORMED.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
