CRETE AND AEGEAN ISLANDS : EFFECTS OF CHANGING CLIMATE ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Objective



STUDIES OF THE HISTORICAL ECOLOGY OF CRETE AND LESROS THAT ARE ALREADY IN PROGRESS WILL BE INTENSIFIED IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THE CHANGES IN VEGETATION AND LAND USE, SOIL DEVELOPMENT AND EROSION ON THESE ISLANDS SINCE THE CLASSICAL PERIOD. THE RESULTS OF ARCHEOLOGICAL SURVEYS WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT PLUS WRITINGS FROM THE MIDDLE AGES, EARLY MAPS AND SKETCHES OF THE LANDSCAPE, AND PHOTOGRAPS TAKEN TOWARDS THE END OF THE LAST CENTURY AND IN THIS ONE. OTHER EVIDENCE WILL COME FROM THE STUDY OF EXISTING VEGETATION AND THE FACTORS CONTROLLING IT, TO THE WITNESS OF LONG-LIVED TREES TO CHANGES TAKING PLACE IN THEIR LIFETIME, AND FROM THE LANDFORMS ASSOCIATED WITH EROSION, DEPOSITION AND TECTONIC MOVEMENTS.
THE SITUATION AS IT IS DEPICTED ON AIR PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE 1940S WILL BE COMPARED WITH EXISTING CONDITIONS ON THE GROUND AND AS THEY APPEAR ON SATELLITE IMAGERY TO DISCOVER WHAT CHANGES HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE LAND USE PATTERN AND VEGETATION COVER OVER THE LAST 40 YEARS AND UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS LARGE SCALE EROSION HAS TAKEN PLACE.
ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES IN THE LONGER TERM WILL BE STUDIED BY EXAMINING THE POLLEN AND OTHER ORGANISMS PRESERVED IN PEAT DEPOSITS (SOME OF WHICH HAVE ALREADY BEEN CORED). PRELIMINARY STUDIES WILL BE MADE OF CERTAIN LAKES AND ALMOST CLOSED EMBAYMENTS WITH A VIEW TO ASCERTAINING THE POSSIBILITIES OF OBTAINING A POLLEN RECORD, DATED BY CARBON 14 AND WITH A MAGNETIC STRATIGRAPHY FOR CORRELATION PURPOSES TO TRACE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES OVER THE LAST SEVERAL THOUSAND YEARS.
CORES WILL BE EXTRACTED FROM OLD CYPRESS, OAK AND OTHER TREES AND THE RING WIDTHS WILL BE MEASURED. THE RING WIDTHS FOR THE LAST FEW TEN YEARS WILL BE CALIBRATED AGAINST THE INSTRUMENTAL WEATHER RECORDS FROM EXISTING METEOROLOGICAL STATIONS IN ORDER TO EXTEND THE CLIMATIC RECORD BACK.
ADDITIONAL WEATHER READINGS WILL BE TAKEN OVER THE TWO YEARS OF THE PROJECT, ESPECIALLY OF RAIN, ON SITES CLOSE TO THE TREES TO BE CORED. VARIATION FROM SEASON TO SEASON AND YEAR TO YEAR IN SNOW COVER WILL BE MAPPED FROM NOAA IMAGERY, SNOW BEING A VERY IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE WATER SUPPLIES OF CRETE.
RAIN, POLLEN AND DUST FALLOUT WILL BE COLLECTED AND MEASURED BY SIMPLE EQUIPMENT AT SEVERAL SITES. THE POLLEN FALLOUT WILL BE RELATED TO THE SURROUNDING VEGETATION PATTERN AND WILL ASSIST IN THE ECOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE PEAT AND LAKE CORES.
THE SATELLITE IMAGERY WILL BE USED TO PROVIDE DATA BASES AND MAPS WHICH WILL ALLOW COMPARISONS TO BE MADE BETWEEN LANDSCAPE CONDITIONS IN A DRY YEAR AS COMPARED WITH A "NORMAL" YEAR. AGRICULTURAL YIELD AND PRODUCTION FIGURES WILL ALSO BE ASSEMBLED AND ANALYSED.
