Objective
TO ASSESS CROP RESPONSE TO CLIMATIC FACTORS.
THIS PROJECT WILL STUDY THE DYNAMICS OF PROCESSES SUCH AS GRAIN GROWTH AND CROP DRY MATTER GROWTH, IN RELATION TO OBSERVATIONS OF LIGHT INTERCEPTION AND PHOTOSYNTHETIC CO2 ASSIMILATION IN FIELD CROPS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE ABILITY OF THE MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS TO RESOLVE EFFECTS ON GROWTH RATES WHICH ARE INHERENTLY VARIABLE FOR FIELD DATA.
PAST DATA ON GROWTH AND YIELD FORMATION AND ON PHOTOSYNTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANTS IN THE FIELD WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP PROCEDURES FOR ANALYSIS AND MODELLING. THE CONCLUSIONS OF THIS WORK WILL BE USED TO GUIDE THE PLANS FOR SUBSEQUENT EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES.
FIELD MEASUREMENTS WILL BE MADE ON CROPS SUBJECT TO TREATMENTS THAT SHOULD MODIFY GRAIN GROWTH RATES, NUMBERS OF GRAINS ON PHOTOSYNTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS. CONTRASTS BETWEEN YEARS WILL BE EXPECTED TO FORM PART OF THE DATABASE. EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENTS WILL INCLUDE NITROGEN FERTILIZER APPLICATIONS AND USE OF FOLIAR SPRAYS OF UREA. CROP DRY WEIGHT, GRAIN (OR EAR) DRY WEIGHT AND PHOTOSYNTHETIC AREA WILL BE MEASURED FREQUENTLY FROM BEFORE ANTHESIS UNTIL BEYOND THE END OF THE GRAIN FILLING PERIOD. PHOTOSYNTHETIC RATES WILL BE MEASURED USING PORTABLE GAS ANALYSIS EQUIPMENT ; RATES WILL BE MEASURED AT A RANGE OF PHOTON FLUX DENSITIES AND CO2 CONCENTRATIONS IN ORDER TO DEFINE THE PARAMETERS OF THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC RESPONSE. TEMPERATURE, INCIDENT RADIATION AND PLAN NITROGEN STATUS WILL ALSO BE MEASURED. THESE APPROACHES WILL BE APPLIED INITIALLY TO WINTER WHEAT, BUT OTHER CROPS, E.G. OILSEED RAPE AND SUNFLOWER, MAY BE STUDIED LATER.
RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL AND MODELLING STUDIES WILL BE BROUGHT TOGETHER TO ASSESS THE BASIS AND APPLICATION OF SIMULATION MODELS, PARTICULARLY FOR PREDICTION OF CROP RESPONSES TO CLIMATE CHANGES. THE SENSITIVITY OF SUCH MODELS TO CHANGES IN THEIR FORMULATION OF PARAMETRIZATION WILL BE DETERMINED, PARTICULARLY IN RELATION TO THE RANGE OF PARAMETER VALUES ACHIEVED IN FIELD STUDIES. FINALLY THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS SCENARIOS OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND CO2 INCREASE ON CROP PRODUCTION WILL BE ASSESSED IN THE LIGHT OF THE MODELS GENERATED.
