SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF LAND SURFACE PROCESSES

Objective

TO PROVIDE RESULTS FOR CLIMATE MODELS ON SOIL WATER DEFICITS IN VARIOUS EUROPEAN REGIONS FOR THE PURPOSE OF STUDYING DESERTIFICATION AND RELATED PROBLEMS.

SYSTEMATIC COMPARISON OF THE SENSITIVITY OF THE PREDICTED INFILTRATION, SOIL MOISTURE STORAGE AND ACTUAL EVAPOTRANSPIRATION FOR A VARIETY OF TYPES OF SOIL-MOISTURE-MODELS ON DIFFERENT LENGTH AND TIME SCALES, RANGING FROM THE SIMPLE BUDYKO BOX TO COMPLEX SOIL-WATER-PLANT SIMULATION SYSTEMS WHICH INCLUDE THE EFFECTS OF ALTERNATING WET AND DRY PERIODS.

STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARAMETERS OF MACRO-SCALE MODELS OF SOIL MOISTURE CHANGES AND THE PARAMETERS OF MICRO-SCALE MODELS OF SOIL MOISTURE CHANGES AND THE PARAMETERS OF MICRO-SCALE MODELS, USING DIFFERENT APPROACHES INCLUDING CHECKER-BOARD EXPERIMENTS, CATASTROPHE THEORY AND STOCHASTIC-DYNAMIC EQUATIONS.SIMULATION OF THE HYDROLOGY OF THE LAND, ON THE SCALE OF A GCM (GLOBAL CLIMATE MODEL) GRID BOX, FOR VARIOUS PATTERNS (DETERMINISTIC AND STOCHATIC) OF LAND SURFACE PARAMETERS WITHIN THE BOX.
EXPLORATORY DEVELOPMENT OF SOIL-MOISTURE MODELS AT VARIOUS SPATIAL SCALES WHICH CAN BE COUPLED WITH REMOTELY SENSED DATA IN THE INFRARED, MICROWARE AND OTHER BANDS.
