Objective
TO STUDY THE SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF INFILTRATION, SOIL MOISTURE STORAGE AND EVAPOTRANSPIRATION.
1. DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF MODELS OF SOIL-ATMOSPHERE EXCHANGES AT THE REGIONAL SCALE (I.E. INFILTRATION, EVAPORATION) TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE SPATIAL VARIATIONS OF THE HYDROTHERMAL PROPERTIES OF THE SOIL AS STOCHASTIC PROCESSES. TWO TYPES OF MODEL WILL BE CONSIDERED : I) COMPLETE MECHANISTIC MODEL OF COUPLED HEAT AND MOISTURE FLOW, AND II) PARAMETERIZED SIMPLIFICATIONS OF THE COMPLETE MODEL I.E. A DEARDORFF + BHUMRALKAR MODEL. THE SOLUTION OF THE COMPLETE MODEL EXPRESSED IN PROBABILISTIC TERMS WILL PROVIDE THE REFERENCE FOR EVALUATING THE SIMPLER MODELS WHICH CAN BE USED IN GLOBAL CLIMATE MODELS.
2. A STUDY OF VARIOUS PROCEDURES FOR DETERMINING SELECTED KEY PARAMETERS IN THE MODELS REFERRED TO ABOVE, FROM THOSE SOIL PROPERTIES WHICH ARE CLASSICALLY AVAILABLE IN PEDOLOGICAL SURVEYS I.E. TEXTURAL AND STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS, BULK DENSITY.
DATA SETS FROM SEMI-ARID REGIONS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE OTHER PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROJECT.
DIFFERENT MODELS OF HEAT AND MOISTURE TRANSFERS IN THE VADOSE ZONE HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN BY COMPARISON WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA, THAT THEY SIMULATE WELL, AT THE LOCAL SCALE, DIFFERENT PROCESSES SUCH AS INFILTRATION, DRAINAGE, EVAPORATION. HOWEVER THERE APPLICABILITY AT THE REGIONAL SCALE POSES THE PROBLEM OF THE SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF THE SOIL HYDROTHERMAL PROPERTIES. IN ORDER TO OVERCOME THIS DIFFICULTY, IT IS PROPOSED HERE TO INVESTIGATE TWO AMONG MANY OTHERS, POSSIBLE APPROACHES :
I) STOCHASTIC MODELLINGS LEADING TO SOLUTIONS EXPRESSED IN PROBABILITY TERMS,
II) PARAMETERIZED MODELS IN WHICH THE INPUTS WOULD BE COMPATIBLE WITH OF THE SCALES OF INTEREST AND OF OBSERVATION.
