Objective
TO CREATE A RELIABLE AND FLEXIBLE CALCULATION TOOL.
THIS RESEARCH CONSISTS IN THE PREPARATION OF A COMPREHENSIVE COMPUTER PROGRAM TO PREDICT CHOKED MULTIPHASE FLOWS THROUGH SIMPLE AND COMPLEX GEOMETRIES. THE COMPUTER PROGRAM WOULD CONSIST :
1) OF A ROOT PROGRAM ACTING AS AN INTERFACE BETWEEN THE USER AND THE DIFFERENT ROUTINES. THIS ROOT PROGRAM SHOULD BE ABLE TO SELECT THE PERTINENT ROUTINES TO DEAL WITH THE PARTICULAR CHOKED FLOW PROBLEMS INTRODUCED BY THE USER;
2) OF SEVERAL ROUTINES, EACH ON BEING DESIGNED TO SOLVE A CLASS OF MULTIPHASE FLOW PROBLEMS : ONE TWO OR MULTICOMPONENT, SMALL OR LARGE QUALITIES.
THANKS TO A MODULAR DESIGN, THE PROGRAM COULD BE EXTENDED PROGRESSIVELY TO INCLUDE NEW MODELS OR IMPROVEMENTS TO EXISTING MODELS.
METHOD :
- PREPARATION OF A CRITICAL FLOW DATA BANK;
- SELECTION OF CRITICAL FLOW MODELS USING THE KNOWLEDGE ALREADY ACCUMULATED AT UCL, AND INTEGRATING OTHER IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS, ESPECIALLY THOSE AVAILABLE AT C E A, H S E AND OTHER PARTNERS OF THE JOINT PROJECT AA. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE RESULTS OBTAINED BY THE A I CH E DESIGN INSTITUTE FOR EMERGENCY RELIEF SYSTEMS (DIERS).
- SYSTEMATIC COMPARISONS BETWEEN THE MODELS AND THE DATA IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE RANGES OF VALIDITY OF THE MODELS.
OUTPUTS :
- A COMPUTER PROGRAM, A LISTING OF THE DATA BANK, DETAILED REPORTS OF THE VALIDATION ACTIVITIES, AND A "USER MANUAL" INCLUDING EXAMPLES.
- CONCLUSIONS REGARDING THE AREAS OF UNCERTAINTIES FROM BOTH POINTS OF VIEW OF DATA AND MODELS.
- TESTS CASES WILL BE RUN WITH INITIAL CONDITIONS CORRESPONDING TO THE PROBLEMS EXAMINED BY THE OTHER PARTNERS OF THE JOINT PROJECT.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
