RESEARCH ON CONTINUOUS AND INSTANTANEOUS HEAVY GAS CLOUDS

Objective

TO PROVIDE IMPROVED METHODS WHETHER NUMERICAL OR PHYSICAL TO PREDICT THE BEHAVIOUR OF HEAVY GAS CLOUDS

THE SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES OF TNO ARE DESCRIBED BELOW.
PHASE 2.2 THE MAIN ACTIVITY OF TNO WILL BE TO PERFORM WIND TUNNEL EXPERIMENTS ON CONTINUOUS RELEASES OF HEAVY GASES. TNO WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE INTERCOMPARISON OF WIND TUNNELS WITH RESPECT TO HEAVY GAS DISPERSION. THIS MEANS THAT ABOUT 2 SELECTED FULL SCALE CONTINUOUS RELEASES (TO BE CARRIED OUT BY RISO IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE TOTAL PROJECT) WILL BE SIMULATED.
PHASE 2.3 AFTERWARDS, TNO WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE MODELLING OF CONTINUOUS RELEASES, BASED ON THE FULL SCALE EXPERIMENTS TO BE CARRIED OUT BY RISO. THE WIND TUNNEL STUDY WILL INCLUDE A LARGER NUMBER OF OBSTACLE AND SOURCE GEOMETRIES. ABOUT 20 DIFFERENT SOURCE/OBSTACLE COMBINATIONS (SELECTED DURING PHASE 0.3) WILL BE STUDIED.
THE TNO WIND-TUNNEL EXPERIMENTS WILL HEAVILY LAY EMPHASIS ON THE MEASUREMENT OF FLUCTUATING CONCENTRATIONS WITHIN THE STEADY GAS CLOUD AS A FUNCTION OF SOURCE AND OBSTACLE GEOMETRY AND POSITION
PHASE 3 THESE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE ANALYZED USING THE SAME STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES AS DEVELOPED BY HSE TO STUDY THE VARIABILITY OF CONCENTRATION IN INSTANTANEOUS CLOUDS.
PHASE 4 CALCULATIONS WITH SIMPLE BOXMODELS AVAILABLE AT TNO WILL BE PERFORMED. THE INFLUENCE OF OBSTACLES WILL BE INCORPORATED BY SOME SIMPLES RULES OF THUMB.
PHASE 5 TNO WILL CARRY OUT THE WIND-TUNNEL SIMULATIONS OF THE FULL SCALE EXPERIMENTS AT A REAL INDUSTRIAL SITE. THESE SIMULATIONS WILL BE USED TO VALIDATE THE USE OF WIND TUNNELS FOR PRACTICAL SITUATIONS OF HEAVY GAS DISPERSION.
PHASE 6 PROGRESS REPORTS AND FINAL REPORT ABOUT THE TNO ACTIVITIES WILL BE PRODUCED. AN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY WILL BE PRODUCED AFTER AGREEMENT WITH THE PARTNERS IN THE PROJECT.
PHASE 7 TNO WILL COORDINATE THE ACTIVITIES OF ALL PARTNERS WITHIN THE PROJECT. THERE WILL ABOUT 8 MEETINGS OF THE PARTNERS DURING THE PROJECT. TNO WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE OTHER PARTNERS.
