RESEARCH ON CONTINUOUS AND INSTANTANEOUS HEAVY GAS CLOUDS

Objective

TO ESTABLISH, FROM THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA, SIMPLE PARAMETRIC REPRESENTATIONS OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE PROBABILITY DENSITY FUNCTION OF CONCENTRATION.

THE WORK TO BE UNDERTAKEN BY HSE IS IN THREE PARTS.
I) THE FIRST PART IS TO ANALYSE WIND TUNNEL DATA OBTAINED PRIOR TO THE START OF THIS PROJECT BY WARREN SPRING LABORATORY UNDER CONTRACT TO HSE. THESE DATA SIGNIFICANTLY EXTEND THE DATABASE RELEVANT TO THE VARIABILITY OF THE DISPERSION PROCESS IN OPEN AND FLAT TERRAIN FOR THORNEY ISLAND TYPE RELEASES. REPLICATED EXPERIMENTS WILL PROVIDE DATA ON THE VARIABLE IN CONCENTRATION LEVELS AT A NUMBER OF DOWNWIND LOCATIONS. THE EXPERIMENTS COVER A RANGE OF INITIAL BULK RICHARDSON NUMBERS. THIS EXTENSIVE SET OF DATA REPRESENTS NEW AND IMPORTANT KNOWLEDGE; IN PARTICULAR THEY PROVIDE A BASIS FOR ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF OBSTACLES ON THE DEGREE OF VARIABILITY.
A STATISTICAL THEORY WILL BE DEVELOPED AND COMPUTERISED. THE SOFTWARE WILL BE EXERCISED ON THE HSE MAINFRAME TO ANALYSE THE ABOVE DATA SET. THE PURPOSE OF THE ANALYSIS IS TO ESTABLISH, IF POSSIBLE, A SIMPLE EXPRESSION FOR THE VARIABILITY IN CONCENTRATION LEVEL AS A FUNCTION OF THE RELEVANT INDEPENDENT VARIABLES. ONE OF THE RESULTS WILL BE THE EVOLUTION OF THE PROBABILITY DENSITY FUNCTION (PDF) OF CONCENTRATION AT A GIVEN LOCATION AS A FUNCTION OF TIME. THESE PDFS WILL FORM THE BASIS OF THE WORK TO ESTABLISH SIMPLE MODELS SUITABLE FOR INCORPORATING INTO BOX MODELS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE RESPECTIVE NEEDS OF TOXIC AND FLAMMABLE HAZARD ASSESSMENTS.
II) THE SECOND PART OF THE HSE PROGRAMME WILL BE TO ESSENTIALLY REPEAT THE ANALYTICAL EXERCICE, SUITABLY MODIFIED IF NECESSARY, TO DERIVE SIMILAR QUANTITIES FOR THE DATA SETS FOR DISPERSION IN THE PRESENCE OF OBSTACLES GATHERED BY WARREN SPRING LABORATORY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF HAMBURG UNDER PHASE 2 OF THE JOINT PROJECT.
III) FINALLY, HSE, IN VIEW OF ITS EXPERTISE IN DISPERSION FIELD TRIALS WILL PROVIDE ADVICE TO RISO UNDER PHASE 1, 2 AND 5 OF THE JOINT PROJECT. ASSISTANCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN WITH THE EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS DERIVED FROM THE CASE STUDY ON CONTINUOUS RELEASES.
