TWO-PHASE CLOUD GROWTH FOLLOWING A SUDDEN RELEASE OF LIQUEFIED GAS.

Objective

TO PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE SET OF DATA TO ALLOW VALIDATION OF EXISTING MODELS AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TECHNIQUES.

THIS CONTRACT FORMS PART OF A JOINT PROJECT:"TWO-PHASE RELEASES OF TOXIC AND FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES - THERMAL INITIATION, SOURCE TERM AND FIRE EFFECTS".TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE FLUIDS USED IN INDUSTRY ARE COMMONLY STORED UNDER PRESSURE AS LIQUEFIED GASES. ACCIDENTAL LOSS OF CONTAINMENT CAN BE TOTAL OR PARTIAL AS IN TANK FAILURE OR SMALL BREAK FROM PIPEWORK.THE ENSUING TWO PHASE PROCESSES GOVERNING VAPOUR CLOUD FORMATION ARE LITTLE UNDERSTOOD. THE PROPOSED PROGRAMME OF WORK WILL ATTEMPT TO RECTIFY THIS BY PROVIDING A COMPREHENSIVE SET OF DATA TO ALLOW VALIDATION OF EXISTING MODELS AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TECHNIQUES.IT WILL HELP CHARACTERISE BEHAVIOUR IN TERMS OF MATERIAL PROPERTIES, STORAGE CONDITIONS AND DISCHARGE GEOMETRY. THE PROPOSED WORK FALLS INTRO THREE MAIN AREAS :(1) CONTINUOUS TWO PHASE FLASHING RELEASES.
A) A LABORATORY STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE OF JETS OF FREON-1L USING AN EXISTING TEST RIG.
B) A LARGER SCALE STUDY ON AN EXISTING TEST RIG OUTDOORS.
(2) INSTANTANEOUS FLASING RELEASES
THE WORK IS TO BE CARRIED OUT ON THESE SEPARATE EXPERIMENTAL RIGS;
A) FREON-1L INITIALLY CONTAINED IN 0.02M3 GLASS SPHERES OR METAL HEMISPHERES WILL BE INSTANTANEOUSLY RELEASED FROM A WIDE RANGE OF STORAGE CONDITIONS.
B) ALTERNATIVE CONTAINMENT SYSTEMS WILL BE MANUFACTURED TO ENABLE SIMILAR QUANTITIES OF PROPANE, BUTANE OR FREON-1L TO BE RELEASED IN THE OPEN AIR OR IN S SAFE AREA.
C) IT IS PROPOSED TO UNDERTAKE A LIMITED NUMBER OF ONE-DIMENSIONAL SIMULATIONS OF THE FLASH EXPANSION PROCESS USING A SHOCK TUBE.
