Objective
TO OBTAIN DIRECT EXPERIMENTAL INFORMATION ON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN LARGE JET FLAMES AND INDUSTRIAL STRUCTURES SUCH AS LPG TANKS AND PIPEWORK.
AMONGST THE DETAILED AIMS OF THIS PROJECT ARE :
(1) TO ESTABLISH A FLEXIBLE ECONOMICAL FACILITY FOR STUDYING MOMEMTUM DOMINATED LARGE JETS OF LPG AND NATURAL GAS AND THE CAPABILITY OF EXTENSION TO OTHER FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES.
(2) TO CHARACTERISE THE DIMENSIONS AND RADIATION FIELD OF JET FLAMES AND THEIR RELATION TO FLOW RATE, APERTURE CONDITIONS, PHASE RATIO, WIND, SOURCE ORIENTATION.
(3) TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH FLAMES ENGULF REALISTIC SIZED OBJECTS, E G TANKS, PIPEWORK AND STRUCTURES.
(4) TO CHARACTERISE HEAT TRANSFER DISTRIBUTION TO ENGULFED OR PARTIALLY ENGULFED FULL SIZE STRUCTURES.
BENEFITS AND INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THE PROJECT WILL INCLUDE :
(1) IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENTS IN QUANTITATIVE ESTIMATION OF HAZARDS TO VESSELS AND OTHER PLANT STRUCTURES FROM JET FIRES.
(2) A SOUND AND COMPREHENSIVE BODY OF INFORMATION ON THE THERMAL ENVIRONMENT NEAR OR WITHIN LARGE ENGULFING TORCH FIRES.
(3) FUNDAMENTAL AND ENGINEERING DATA FOR FIRE CONSEQUENCE MODELLING.
(4) SIGNIFICANT ADDITIONS TO THE SCIENCE OF HEAT TRANSFER.
(5) IMPROVEMENTS IN HAZARD ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES AND THE AMELIORATION OF JET FIRE IMPACT.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
