Objective
TO PROVIDE THE MODELLER OF THE CHOCKED TWO-PHASE FLOW AT THE BREACH WITH INLET BOUNDARY CONDITIONS.
TASK 1.
CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF THE EXISTING EXPERIMENTS AND MODELS DESCRIBING THE FLUID FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER INSIDE A VESSEL OR A PIPE SUBMITTED TO A RAPID OR SLOW BLOWDOWN. THE EMPHASIS WILL BE PUT ON NUCLEATION, BUBBLE GROWTH AND LEVEL SWELL WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF CHEMICAL, PETROLEUM AND NUCLEAR ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS. SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO FLUIDS LIKE PROPANE AND AMMONIA.
TASK 2.
IN PARALLEL WITH TASK 1, AN EXPERIMENTAL SETUP WILL BE DESIGNED AND BUILT TO VISUALIZE THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE FLUID (PROPANE AND AMMONIA) WHEN FLASHING WITHIN A VESSEL.THE NATURE OF NUCLEATION, IN THE BULK OR AT THE WALL, WILL BE EXAMINED AS WELL AS THE GROWTH RATE OF THE BUBBLES AND THE LEVEL SWELL. PRESSURES AND TEMPERATURES WILL BE MEASURED. HIGH SPEED CAMERAS (SPIN PHYSICS, NAC, HYCAM, DYNAFAX) WILL BE USED FOR VISUALIZATION. FAST AND SLOW BLOWDOWNS WILL BE STUDIED WITH DIFFERENT INITIAL FILLS, PRESSURES AND TEMPERATURES. SEVERAL FLUIDS INCLUDING PROPANE AND AMMONIA WILL BE USED TO ASCERTAIN THE SCALING LAWS THAT WILL BE DEVELOPED IN TASK 3.
TASK 3.
THE DATA WILL BE INTERPRETED IN TERMS OF THE CONCLUSIONS DRAWN FROM TASK 1. THE RESULTS WILL BE USED AS INLET BOUNDARY CONDITIONS FOR THE BREACH BEHAVIOUR, A SUBJECT THAT WILL BE DEALT WITH IN PROPOSAL 5 OF THE ANNEX.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
