Objective
THE WORK WILL LEAD TO AN IMPROVED SET OF DATA WHICH IS A NECESSARY BASIS FOR BETTER PHYSICAL UNDERSTANDING, MODEL IMPROVMENT ANS HAZARD ASSESSMENT.
THE PROPOSED WORK WILL IMPROVE THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT TWO-PHASE FLOW DISCHARGES RELATED WITH LARGE-SCALE RELEASES OF DIFFERENT FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES. IN CONNECTION WITH THE SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE RELEASES PERFORMED BY HSE (P6) THE WORK WILL LEAD TO AN IMPROVED SET OF DATA ON MASS FLOW RATES AND CLOUD FORMATION WHICH IS A NECESSARY BASIS FOR MODEL IMPROVEMENT AND HAZARD ASSESSMENT.
AN EXISTING TEST RIG WILL BE USED FOR LARGE-SCALE JET RELEASE EXPERIMENTS. THE PRESSURE VESSEL HAS A VOLUME OF 5 M3 AND A MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE PRESSURE OF 50 BAR. RELEASE CAN BE PERFORMED EITHER FROM THE GAS OR FROM THE LIQUID PHASE WITH AN OPENING DIAMETER UP TO 100 MM.
THE EXISTING TEST RIG WILL BE MODIFIED TO FIT THE CONDITIONS SPECIFIED TOGETHER WITH HSE.
RELEVANT PARAMETERS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL SETUP AND THE RELEASED SUBSTANCES ARE FOR EXAMPLE, BOILING TEMPERATURE, HEAT OF EVAPORATION, MOLECULAR WEIGHT, VISCOSITY, FLAMMABILITY TEMPERATURE, FLAMMABILITY LIMITS, RELEASE CONDITIONS (SITE AND SIZE OF THE OPENING, ANGLE OR RELEASE, DISTANCE TO THE GROUND, ETC.). SOME INITIAL TESTS WILL BE RUN WITH THE OBJECTIVE TO ADJUST THE CONDITIONS AT BOTH TEST SITES (HSE AND BATTELLE).
WE PROPOSE TO MEASURE DISCHARGE RATES, EXIT PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE AND VAPOUR CONCENTRATION IN THE DEVELOPING JET, GAS-LIQUID MASS RATIO AND FLOW CHARACTERISTICS (VELOCITY AND VELOCITY DIFFERENCE). WE INTEND TO USE THE TECHNIQUE OF THE EXTENDED LASER DETECTION SYSTEM OF HSE OR A SIMILAR ONE.IN THE FIELD EXPERIMENTS REGARD BE PAID FOR THE TRANSITION FROM MOMEMTUM TO BUOYANCY-DOMINATED DISPERSION, ATMOSPHERIC EFFECTS AND THE INTERACTION WITH GROUND OR OBSTACLES IN THE JET PATH.
THE EVALUATION AND ANALYSIS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA IS DIRECTED TO A SUITABLE MODIFICATION OF RELEASE MODELS TO INCORPORATE COMPLICATED SOURCE TERMS LIKE TWO-PHASE FLASHING FLOWS.
