HEAVY METAL TOXICITY IN MYCORRHIZAL SPRUCE SEEDLINGS

Objective

TO GENERATE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION IN ORDER TO ELUCIDATE THE INTERFERENCE OF AIR POLLUTION WITH KEY PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN THE FOREST TREES.

HEAVY METAL TOXICITY IN COMBINATION WITH SOIL ACIDIFICATION IS ACCEPTED TO BE A CAUSATIVE AGENT IN FOREST DECLINE. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF HEAVY METALS ON THE DEGREE OF MYCORRHIZATION OF THE SEEDLINGS, AND THE DEGREE TO WHICH MYCORRHIZATION ALTERS THE TOLERANCE OF SEEDLINGS TO HEAVY METALS WILL BE ASSESSED. THESE STUDIES WILL BE COMBINED WITH VARYING NITROGEN SOURCES, AS THESE MAY MODIFY PLANT REACTIONS. THE HEAVY METALS USED, WILL BE THOSE WHICH ARE ESTIMATED TO MAKE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO FOREST DECLINE HG AND TL (FROM COAL BURNING) PB (AUTOMOBILE EXHAUST) AND CD.

THE INVESTIGATION WILL USE PICAE ABIES SEEDLINGS GROWN IN ASEPTIC CULTURE, AND MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI ISOLATED FROM HEALTHY AND DECLINING TREE STANDS.

ALL WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN ARTIFICIAL SOIL SOLUTIONS WITH ENVIRONMENTAL RELEVANT LEVELS OF HEAVY METALS AND NITROGEN USED. MINERAL CONTENTS OF THE SEEDLINGS AND MYCORRHIZAE WILL BE ESTIMATED BY AAS, AND THEIR DISTRIBUTION BY ELECTRON MICROPROBE ANALYSIS. THE DISTRIBUTION OF MINERALS IN ROOT AND MYCORRHIZA GROWN UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS WILL BE COMPARED TO THOSE OF ROOTS COLLECTED FROM HEALTHY AND DECLINING TREE STANDS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
