Objective
TO PROVIDE INFORMATION NEEDED TO ELUCIDATE THE MECHANISMS OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN AIR POLLUTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITING FACTORS (PATHOGENS).
THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO STUDY THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN 03 AND THE WEAK PATHOGENS BOTRYTIS CINERA AND SCLEROTINIA SCLEROTIORUM IN CAUSING INJURY TO PHASEOLUS VULGARIS BEAN. FOR CLARIFYING THIS PHENOMENON AN EXPERIMENTAL MODEL SYSTEM WILL BE DEVELOPED.
IN THE FIRST PLACE IT IS TO BE KNOWN TO WHAT 03 INCREASES THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF BEAN TO B. CINEREA AND S. SCLECOTIORUM, AND TO WHAT EXTENT THESE FUNGAL DISEASES CHANGE THE RESPONSE OF BEAN TO 03. SECONDLY, THE MECHANISMS OF THESE INTERACTIONS ON THE MICROBIOLOGICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL LEVEL HAVE TO BE STUDIED (IN COOPERATION WITH PROF. DR. R. GUDERIAN, ESSEN). ULTIMATELY, RESULTS OBTAINED UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS HAVE TO BE VALIDATED IN FIELD CONDITIONS BY USING AN 03 FIELD FUMIGATION SYSTEM, TO BE BUILT WITHIN THE PROJECT. THIS FIELD FUMIGATION SYSTEM WILL ALSO BE USED FOR VALIDATION OF COMPARABLE RESEARCH ON THE PREDISPOSING INFLUENCE OF 03 FOR FUNGAL ATTACK OF AGRICULTURAL CROPS (IN COOPERATION WITH PROF. DR. H. FEHRMENN, GOETTINGEN).
THE RESULTS MAY BE USED FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF EXPOSURE-RESPONSE FUNCTIONS, NEEDED FOR THE ESTABLISHING OF AIR QUALITY STANDARDS FOR 03.
EXTRA COOPERATION.
TO PREPARE AND ELABORATE A PROTOCOL FOR EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES, DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN THE COOPERATING LABORATORIES ARE PLANNED. IN ADDITION, OTHER LABORATORIES FROM THE UK (IMPERILA COLLEGE OF LONDON, UNIVERSITY OF LANCASTER), DENMARK (UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN) AND BELGIUM (UNIVERSITY OF LEUVEN), WHERE COMPARABLE PROJECTS DEALING WITH INTERACTIONS ARE IN PROGRESS, WILL BE INVOLVED IN THESE DISCUSSIONS.
