IRISH PARTICIPATION IN THE COMMON EUROPEAN OPEN-TOP CHAMBERS PROGRAMME ON CROP-LOSS

Objective

THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE IS TO TEST WHETHER THE AMBIENT CONCENTRATIONS OF THE ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTANTS IN IMPORTANT AGRICULTURE AREAS AFFECT CROP YIELD OR NOT.

BARLEY AND OTHER PLANTS WILL BE GROWN IN A SERIES OF OPEN TOP CHAMBERS AT OAK PARK RESEARCH STATION AT CARLOW, IRELAND. EXPERIMENTS WILL BE DONE USING COMMON PROTOCOLS ESTABLISHED FOR THE EUROPEAN OPEN-TOP PROJECT.
OPEN TOP CHAMBERS PROVIDE A POWERFUL TOOL FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF CROP LOSS DUE TO AIR POLLUTANTS. BY USING A COMBINATION OF 1) CHAMBERS WITH AIR FILTERED TO REMOVE AIR POLLUTANTS 2)CHAMBERS WITH UNFILTERED AIR AND 3)OUTSIDE PLOTS IT IS POSSIBLE TO ASSESS CROP LOSS AT A PARTICULAR SITE.

THE SITE IN IRELAND PART OF THE EUROPEAN PROJECT IS OF EXTREME IMPORTANCE AS IT IS SITUATED ON THE WESTERN FRINGE OF EUROPE. THE PREVAILING WIND AND LOCATION AT THE OAK PARK RESEARCH CENTRE, CARLOW (SOME 60 MILES SOUTHWEST OF DUBLIN) MEANS THAT THE IRISH CHAMBERS WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY HAVE THE LOWEST AMBIENT POLLUTION LEVELS UNDER NORMAL WEATHER CONDITIONS. IN PARTICULAR THE IRISH SITE IS LIKELY TO HAVE VERY LOW AMBIENT NOX CONCENTRATIONS IN CONTRAST TO OTHER OPEN-TOP CHAMBER SITES WHERE AMBIENT LEVELS ARE SIGNIFICANT. FILTERING NOX SUCCESSFULLY IS FRAUGHT WITH PROBLEMS. THE IRISH SITE WILL THEREFORE PROVIDE A VALUABLE CONTROL FOR OTHER EUROPEAN OPEN-TOP CHAMBER SITES.FURTHERMORE THE RESULTS FROM IRELAND SHOULD ESTABLISH WHETHER VERY LOW PREVAILING POLLUTION LEVELS INDUCE ANY SIGNIFICANT CROP-LOSS.
THE PROJECT WILL INVOLVE GROWING WINTER BARLEY IN A SERIES OF OPEN-TOP CHAMBERS AT OAK PARK RESEARCH STATION AT CARLOW, IRELAND. THE CHAMBERS WILL ALSO BE USED FOR ADDITIONAL EXPERIMENTS AIMED AT ELUCIDATING THE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTANTS ON THE PHYSIOLOGY AND METABOLISM OF PLANTS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
