Objective TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND OF THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DETERIORATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS, AND TO HELP PROVIDE A SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION. THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK WILL BE DONE IN THREE PHASES : 1) THE MASS TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS OF SO2 ON MARBLES WITH DIFFERENT SPECIFIC SURFACE AREAS, UNDER VARIOUS EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS (TEMPERATURE, FLOW-RATE, SO2 CONCENTRATION), WILL BE DETERMINED. 2) THE EFFECT OF MOISTURE ON THE MEASURED MASS TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS WILL BE STUDIED UNDER THE EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS MENTIONED ABOVE. 3) THE MASS TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS OF SO2 ON MARBLES CONTAINING "CONTAMINANTS" (METAL OXIDES OR PLASTERS), WHICH CAN ACT EITHER AS CATALYSTS OR AS INHIBITORS, WILL BE DETERMINED. THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE, FLOW-RATE AND SO2 CONCENTRATION ON THE MASS TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS WILL AGAIN BE STUDIED.
