EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION ON HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS AND THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR CONSERVATION

Objective

TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND OF THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DETERIORATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS, AND TO HELP PROVIDE A SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION.

IT IS INTENDED TO SAMPLE AND ANALYSE AMBIENT AIR FOR HNO3, NO3, SO4 2-, CL- ETC. OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, ESPECIALLY ON DAYS WHEN PHOTOCHEMICAL ACTIVITY IS HIGH.
THE MOST SUITABLE SAMPLING SITE IS CONSIDERED TO BE ON THE ACROPOLIS HILL.

GROUND AND GRADED PENTELIC MARBLE AND OTHER STONES WILL BE EXPOSED TO KNOWN FLOWS OF AMBIENT AIR AT THE SAME SITE, IN A SUITABLY DESIGNED REACTOR AND ITS CONTENTS WILL BE ANALYSED FOR NO3-, CL-S ETC. BY LAECHING THE MARBLE WITH DEIONIZED WATER.
PENTELIC MARBLE AND OTHER CALCAREOUS STONES WILL BE EXPOSED ALSO TO INDIVIDUAL ACIDIC POLLUTANTS, WHICH ARE AVAILABLE IN PUR FORM, SUCH AS NO2 AT SUITABLE CONCENTRATIONS AND DEGREES OF DRYNESS.
THE EFFECTS OF DILUTE AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF ACIDIC SALTS, ON MARBLE AND CALCAREOUS STONES WILL BE INVESTIGATED.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
