Objective
TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND OF THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DETERIORATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS, AND TO HELP PROVIDE A SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION.
1) THE PROVISION OF SOPHISTICATED MICRO-ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES TO ALL PARTICIPATING GROUPS INCLUDING X-RAY FLUORESCENCE, ION CHROMATOGRAPHY, ANODIC STRIPPING VOLTAMETRY, ELECTRON PROBE X-RAY MICRO-ANALYSIS, ETC.
2) ACQUISITION OF QUANTITATIVE DATA ON DECAY RATES FOR TYPICAL LIMESTONE MONUMENTS IN THE LOW COUNTRIES AND FOR SOME STONE CONSOLIDANTS, INCLUDING THE USE OF MICROCATCHMENT UNITS.
3) RELEVANT INFORMATION ON WEATHER, AIR QUALITY AND MICRO-CLIMATE WILL BE OBTAINED.SHORT-TERM EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED NEAR SELECTED HISTORICAL BUILDINGS E G MEASURING GASEOUS AIR COMPONENTS (HC1, HNO3, H2SO4) AND PARTICULATES IN AIR AND RAIN WATER.
