TO ASSESS THE IMPACT OF A NEW SULPHUR EMISSION SOURCE ON THE BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY OF YET UNACIDIFIED BUT ACID-SENSITIVE LAKES IN IRELAND AND THE UNITED KINGDOM.
BASED ON A VERY SUCCESSFUL WESTERN EUROPEAN BASELINE PROJECT ON THE CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF POORLY BUFFERED WATERS, UNDERTAKEN BY AN FORAS FORBARTHA IN THE PRECEDING ENVIRONMENT R&D PROGRAMME (CONTRACT EV3V078400), THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS AIMING TO INVESTIGATE THE IMPACT OF A SIGNIFICANT POLLUTANT LOAD ON THE CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY OF UNACIDIFIED, ACID0SENSITIVE LAKEC IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND AND IN NORTHERN IRELAND.
A 900MW COAL BURNING ELECTRICITY GENERATION STATION IS NEARING COMPLETION AT MONEYPOINT ON THE SHANNON ESTUARY. AT FULL PRODUCTION THIS STATION WILL LEAD TO A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE OF THE SULPHUR EMISSION INTO THE ATMOSPHERE OVER IRELAND. BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION OF THIS STATION, AND AS THE PREVAILING WIND IS WESTERLY THESE EMISSIONS ARE LIKELY TO AFFECT PRECIPITATION CHARACTERISTICS OVER MOST OF THE ACID SENSITIVE AREAS OF IRELAND AND NORTHERN IRELAND. THE COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH WILL BE UNDERTAKEN BY AN FORAS FORBARTHA (IRL), THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN (IRL), THE DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT FOR NORTHERN IRELAND (UK), AND THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON (UK).
