Objective
TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTANTS ON GENETIC STRUCTURE OF FOREST TREES AND ASSESS THE POTENTIAL RISK OF GENETIC LOSSES.
An open top facility was installed on the ground of the Fraunhofer-Institut in Schmallenberg. The influence of sulphur dioxide, ozone and nitrogen dioxide as well as several climatic factors on young Norway spruces were investigated. Data concerning biochemical, histological and physiological parameters were obtained.

THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON TWO MAIN ASPECTS:
1) INVESTIGATIONS ON INHIBITION OF POLLEN GERMINATION IN SCOTS PINE WITH RESPECT TO FERTILITY SELECTION.
PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS HAVE SHOWN THAT SENSITIVITY OF POLLEN GERMINATION SHOWS TREE TO TREE VARIATION. THIS IS IMPORTANT WITH RESPECT TO FERTILITY SELECTION. POLLEN FROM CLONES FROM THE SCOTS PINE CLONE COLLECTION OGF THE INSTITUTE WILL BE TESTED IN VITRO UNDER CONTROLLED FUMIGATION CONDITIONS IN RELATION TO CONTROL CONDITIONS AND INVESTIGATED BY LIGHTMICROSCOPY FOR POLLEN GERMINATION AND POLLEN TUBE GROWTH.WITH RESPECT TO THE INVESTIGATIONS PLANNED UNDER 2 A GREATER NUMBER OF CLONES IS TO BE TESTED. PARTS OF THE MATERIAL WILL ALSO BE INVESTIGATED BY ELECTRONMICROSCOPY FOR SPECIAL QUESTIONS (CO-OPERATION WITH DR. U.SCHMITT INSTITUTE FOR WOODBIOLOGY AND WOOD PRESERVATION, BFH).
2) INVESTIGATIONS ON THE GENETIC STRUCTURE IN THE PLANT MATERIAL OF 2.1 BY GENE-MARKERS. IF THE RESULTS FROM 1 REVEAL SUFFICIENT VARIATION (WHICH IS TO BE EXPECTED FROM PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS), GROUPS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DIFFERENT SENSITIVITY WILL BE INVESTIGATED FOR THEIR GENETIC STRUCTURE (DEGREE OF HETEROZYGOSITY, GENETIC DIVERSITY ETC.) SHALL BE OBTAINED TO ESTIMATE SELECTIVE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTANTS.
