Objective
TO ASSESS THE IMPACT ON FOREST ECOSYSTEMS OF THE PRESCRIBED BURNING USED TO PREVENT WILD FIRES.
THIS PROJECT WILL INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PRESCRIBED FIRE, SEEDING OF HERBACEOUS SPECIES, AND GOAT GRAZING IN CONTROLLING THE DENSE SHRUBBY UNDERSTORY OF MEDITERRANEAN WARM ZONE PINE FOREST, ACCOMPLISHING BOTH LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION AND FIRE HAZARD REDUCTION.
THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES WILL BE:
1) TO INCREASE THE PRODUCTION OF HIGHER QUALITY FORAGE FOR LIVESTOCK AND WILDLIFE ANIMALS.
2) TO REDUCE THE FIRE HAZARDS.
3) TO INVESTIGATE EFFECTIVE WAYS OF LITTER DECOMPOSITION.
IT IS EXPECTED THAT PRESCRIBED BURNING, FOLLOWED BY SEEDING OF HERBACEOUS SPECIES, WILL AMELIORATE GRAZING CONDITIONS AND LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION WILL BE INCREASED, WHILE WILDFIRE HAZARD WILL BE DRASTICALLY REDUCED.
