Objective
CREATION OF A MODEL DESCRIBING THE EFFECT OF FIRE THROUGH ITS TWO MAIN COMPONENTS, ASHES AND HEAT WAVE, ON THE FACTORS CONTROLLING SOIL EROSION.
THE AIM OF THE PRESENT WORK IS TO ASCERTAIN THE EFFECT OF FIRE THROUGH ITS TWO MAIN COMPONENTS, ASHES AND HEAT WAVE, ON THE FACTORS CONTROLLING SOIL EROSION IN TWO DIFFERENT DISTRICTS OF SOUTHERN EUROPE WHERE REPEATED FIRES ARE COMMON: GALICIA (SPAIN) AND TOSCANA (ITALY).
PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE FOCUSSED ON THE IMMEDIATE EFFECT OF FIRE ON SOIL ERODIBILITY AND ON THE EVOLUTION OF RELATED PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PARAMETERS E.G. WATER REPELLENCE, SURFACE WATER BALANCE, RUNOFF, HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY, AFTER THE PASSAGE OF A FIRE. THE INFLUENCE OF THE INDUCED MODIFICATIONS ON THE REGENERATION OF THE VEGETATIVE COVER AND THE EVENTUAL RESTORATION OF THE ORIGINAL SOIL PROPERTIES WILL ALSO BE STUDIED.
ON THIS BASIS, AN EXPLANATORY MODEL WILL BE CONSTRUCTED WHICH SHOULD ALSO SERVE FOR THE PREDICTION OF THE EROSION HAZARD IN BURNED SOILS. THIS MODEL SHOULD HELP TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN BENEFICIAL AND DETRIMENTAL FIRES AND SHOULD BE USED TO RECOMMEND METHODS FOR THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE TECHNIQUE OF "PRESCRIBED BURNING" IN THE FORESTS AND BRUSHLANDS OF SOUTHERN EUROPE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE POSSIBILITY OF PREDICTING THE INTENSITY OF SOIL ERSION WILL BE USEFUL TO ESTABLISH THE URGENCY AND THE EXTENT OF CONSERVATION MEASURES FOR BURNED SOILS.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
