Objective
TESTING OF MATHEMATICAL MODELS DESCRIBING NITRATE MOVEMENT IN THE GROUNDWATER AND DEVELOPMENT OF CRITERIA AND PROCESSES FOR THE USE OF THESE MODELS IN DECISION MAKING.
1.- ELABORATION OF MASS FLOW RATES CONCERNING NITRATE FROM THE UNSATURATED ZONE TO THE GROUNDWATER SURFACE RELATED TO LAND USE. THESE FLOW RATES WILL BE CALCULATED IN SPACE AND TIME SO THAT TEHY CAN BE USED AS INPUT FOR GROUNDWATER TRANSPORT MODELS. THIS WORK WILL BE COORDINATED WITH THE GROUP "NITRATE IN SOILS: SOIL PROFILE".
2.- EVALUATION OF RELATIONS BETWEEN DENITRIFICATION PROCESSES AND PHYSICO-AND BIOCHEMICAL CONDITIONS IN THE AQUIFER.
3.- TEST OF TRANSPORT MODELS TO DESCRIBE THE MIGRATION OF NITRATE IN AQUIFERS. THE APPLICATION WILL BE ORIENTED TOWARDS THE AVAILABILITY OF DATA, AND TO DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPUTER SYSTEMS.
4.- EVALUATION OF DENITRIFICATION IN THE GIVEN TEST AREAS BY MEASURING THE CONCENTRATION OF NITRATE VERSUS THE DEPTH OF THE AQUIFER AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS, AND BY APPLICATION OF TRANSPORT AND HYDROCHEMICAL MODELS.
5.- DEVELOPEMNT OF A STRATEGY FOR THE LOCATION AND THE DESIGN OF PUMPING WELLS AND FOR THE PUMPING RATES, TO KEEP THE NITRATE CONCENTRATION OF THE DISCHARGED WATER BELOW 50 MG/L.
6.- THE APPLICATION OF THE MODELS TO SIMULATE FLOW AND TRANSPORT PROCESSES WITH RESPECT TO NITRATE IN GROUNDWATER.
