Objective
TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND OF THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DETERIORATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS, AND TO HELP PROVIDE A SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION.
THE MAIN CONTRIBUTION OF THE LABORATORY WILL BE TO DEVELOP QUANTITATIVE DAMAGE FUNCTIONS RELATING MACRO AND MICRO-CLIMATIC AND POLLUTION PARAMETERS TO DAMAGE IN VARIOUS TYPES OF STONE.
THE MAIN CLIMATIC-ATMOSPHERIC VARIABLES CONSIDERED WILL INCLUDE: TEMPERATURE, RAINFALL, MOISTURE, WIND PARAMETERS, PH, SO3, ETC...
HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS WILL BE STUDIED IN SEVERAL PARTS OF PAVIA, AND IN OTHER ITALIAN LOCATIONS.
WHERE APPROPRIATE, RELEVANT DATA FROM OTHER PARTICIPANTS WILL ALSO BE UTILIZED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF QUANTITATIVE DAMAGE FUNSTIONS.
THE WORK WILL EXTEND TO EVALUATE THE PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS GENERIC CLASSES OF CHEMICALS.
