Objective
ASSESSMENT OF THE PRESENT STATUS OF ACIDIFICATION IN HIGH ALTITUDE LAKES AND THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THEIR CATCHMENTS TO ACIDIFICATION.
THE JOINT RESEARCH PROJECT BETWEEN THE ITALIAN INSTITUTE OF HYDROBIOLOGY (PALLANZA), THE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY OF THE PROVINCE BOLZANO (LAIVES, ITALY), THE UNIVERSITY OF INNSBRUCK (AUSTRIA) AND ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY OF THE CANTON TESSIN (BELLINZONA, SWITZERLAND) IS INVESTIGATING THE ACIDIFICATION IN HIGH ALTITUDE LAKES OF THE ALPINE MOUNTAINS. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS IS GIVEN TO:
-THE CLASSIFICATION OF ALPINE LAKES ON THE BASIS OF THE GEOLOGY AND SOIL IN THEIR WATERSHEDS, AND THEIR HYDROCHEMISTRY;
- THE IDENTIFICATION OF CLASSES OF LAKES MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO ACIDIFICATION DUE TO PARAMETERS MENTIONED ABOVE;
- THE ESTABLISHMENT OF METHODS MOST USEFUL FOR COMMON USE IN THIS PROJECT TO QUANTIFY LEVELS OF ACIDIFICATION IN SUSCEPTIBLE LAKES;
- THE QUANTIFICATION OF SO-CALLED "CRITICAL ACID LOADS" FOR EACH CLASS OF ALPINE LAKES.
SUPPORTING DATA COLLECTED IN PREVIOUS STUDIES WILL BE CRITICALLY ASSESSED AND INCLUDED AS FAR AS POSSIBLE IN A DATA BASE ON THE ACIDIFICATION OF LAKES IN THIS GEOGRAPHICAL AREA.
