QUANTIFICATION OF THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE ALPINE LAKES TO ACIDIFICATION

Objective

THE COOPERATIVE PROJECT BETWEEN THE CNR-ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI IDROBIOLOGIA, PALLANZA, THE LABORATORIO BIOLOGICO PROVINCIALE, LAIVES (ITALY), THE UNIVERSITY OF INNSBRUCK (AUSTRIA), AND THE LABORATORIO STUDI AMBIENTALI, BELLINZONA (SWITZERLAND) WILL INVESTIGATE THE SUSCEPTIBILITY TO AND THE EXTENT OF ACIDIFICATION OF ALPINE LAKES. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS IS GIVEN TO THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS:

- ESTABLISHMENT OF A JOINTLY USED METHODOLOGY TO QUANTIFY THE LEVEL OF ACIDIFICATION IN ALPINE LAKES.
- QUANTIFICATION OF THE PRESENT LEVEL OF ACIDIFICATION IN THESE LAKES.
- CLASSIFICATION OF THE ALPINE LAKES DUE TO THE GEOLOGY OF THEIR WATERSHEDS AND THEIR HYDROCHEMISTRY.
- IDENTIFICATION OF THOSE LAKE CLASSES WHICH ARE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO ACIDIFICATION.
- QUANTIFICATION OF SO-CALLED "CRITICAL ACID LOADS" FOR EACH CLASS OF ALPINE LAKES.

THE CNR-ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI IDROBIOLOGIA IN PALLENZA WILL COORDINATE THE RESEARCH EFFORTS IN THIS COOPERATIVE PROJECT AND WILL INSURE THE COMPARABILITY AND REPRESENTTATIVITY OF MEASUREMENTS AND HYDROCHEMICAL DATA, TAKING ALSO INTO ACCOUNT SUPPORTING DATA COLLECTED IN PREVIOUS STUDIES.

BASED ON THESE DATA COLLECTIONS, IN THE SECOND PHASE OF THE PROJECT (1990-1991) EXISTING MODELS TO QUANTIFY ACIDIFICATION, DEVELOPED FOR LAKES IN NORTHERN EUROPE, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND CANADA, WILL BE TESTED AND ACCORDINGLY ADAPTED TO THE SITUATION IN THE ALPINE REGION, AND, WHEREVER NECESSARY, NEW MODELS WILL BE ESTABLISHED TO RESPOND ON SPECIFIC QUESTIONS AS REGARDS THIS SUBJECT.

THE RESEARCH OF CNR-ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI IDROBIOLOGIA, PALLANZA, WILL BE DIRECTED TO THE LAKES IN THE ITALIAN ALPINE REGION, EXCEPT THE TRENTI-NO ALTO ADIGE, WHICH WILL BE SUBJECT OF THE PROJECT OF THE LABORATORIO BIOLOGICO PROVINCIALE IN LAIVES, ITALY.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
