Objective
TO ASSESS SOURCES, FLUXES AND SINKS OF EUTROPHICATION CAUSING NUTRIENTS IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE PROTECTION OF NATURAL HABITATS OF MEDITERRANEAN RIVER DELTAS.
THIS COORDINATE RESEARCH PROJECT BETWEEN 3 INSTITUTES FROM SPAIN, FRANCE AND ITALY COMPARES THE EUTROPHICATION IN THE DELTAS OF THE RIVERS EBRO, RHONE AND PO, WHICH ARE ARISING FROM THE VARIOUS HUMAN USES OF THE SURROUNDING WETLAND HABITATS AND WHERE ON THE OTHER HAND THE NUTRIENT OVERLOAD CONTRIBUTES TO THE LOSS OF ESTUARINE AND COASTAL HABITATS.
IN PARTICULAR THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH WILL BE UNDERTAKEN:
- ESTABLISHMENT OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHATE BALANCES IN THE RIVERS AND SELECTED SIDE CHANNELS (E.G. IRRIGATION CHANNELS).
- MEASUREMENTS OF FLOW RATES OF NUTRIENTS IN THE VARIOUS COMPARTMENTS OF THE HABITATS.
- ESTIMATION OF EUTROPHICATION AND DENITRIFICATION PROCESSES AS WELL AS PHOSPHATE REMOVAL IN THE WATERS.
- BIO-ASSAY STUDIES TO INVESTIGATE EUTROPHICATION PROCESSES IN WET SOILS AND BIOAVAILABILITY OF NUTRIENTS TO REPRESENTATIVE PLANT SPECIES.
THE RESULTS OF THE ABOVE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE USED TO VERIFY A PREDICTIVE EUTROPHICATION MODEL, AND TO PROPOSE REASONABLE STRATEGIES FOR COUNTERMEASURES AGAINST EUTROPHICATION.
