Objective
THE BOTANICAL INSTITUTE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PATRAS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COORDINATION IN THIS JOINT RESEARCH PROJECT WITH THE
- UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN,
- UNIVERSITY OF LUND (SWEDEN),
- UNIVERSITY OF BERLIN,
WHICH IS BASED ON A FORMER PROJECT WITHIN THE 3RD ENVIRONMENT R&D PROGRAMME (CONTRACT EV3V083500) ON ENDEMIC PLANTS ON A GREEK ISLAND (YIOURA, SPORADES).
THIS COOPERATIVE PROJECT WILL START TO WIDEN THE GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE OF THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ECOLOGICAL STATUS OF IMPORTANT SPECIES OF THE GREEK FLORA WHICH ARE PRESENTLY UNDER THREAT OR POTENTIALLY ENDANGERED.
THE FLORA OF GREECE COMPRISES CIRCA 4,900 SPECIES OF VASCULAR PLANTS (AS COMPARED TO CIRCA 1,800 IN BRITAIN AND CIRCA 1,400 IN DENMARK). IN TERMS OF ENDEMICS (IE SPECIES OCCURING NOWHERE ELSE) GREECE HEADS THE EUROPEAN LISTS WITH CIRCA 730 SPECIES FOLLOWED BY MAINLAND SPAIN WITH CIRCA 500. NO LESS THAN CIRCA 520 OF THE GREEK ENDEMICS HAVE BEEN LISTED AS RARE OR THREATENED. IN MANY CASES PRESENT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THESE SPECIES IS VERY FRAGMENTARY, HOWEVER.
IN THE COURSE OF THE PROJECT PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO ENDEMIC, RARE AND THREATENED SPECIES WHICH CAN BE CONSIDERED AS KEY INDICATORS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. THEIR GEOGRAPHICAL OCCURENCE, ECOLOGY, POPULATION STRUCTURE, ETC WILL BE RECORDED IN AN EFFORT TO IDENTIFY REASONS FOR THEIR RARENESS OR DECLINE AND TO PINTPOINT AREAS TO WHICH CONSERVATIONAL MEASURES SHOULD BE APPLIED.
THE WORK WILL BE BASED ON LIVING PLANTS IN THE FIELD AND IN THE EXPERIMENTAL GARDEN. COMPUTER FACILITIES WILL BE USED EXTENSIVELY, PARTICULARLY FOR WOOD PROCESSING AND DATABASE. SPECIAL SOFTWARE FOR THE "FLORA HELLENICA INFORMATION SYSTEM" IS NOW BEING DEVELOPED, AND THE HOME BASES FOR THE PROJECT WILL LATER BE LINKED IN A NETWORK.
STUDIES OF CHROMOSOMES AND OTHER STRUCTURAL FEATURES AS WELL AS CROSSING EXPERIMENTS WILL BE USED TO ESTABLISH TAXONOMIC RELATIONSHIPS.
IN THE FIRST TWO YEARS WORK WILL BE CONCENTRATED ON DEVELOPMENT OF THE DATABASE, SURVEY OF RELEVANT LITERATURE AND COLLECTIONS, FILED STUDIES AND REVISION OF INDIVIDUAL TAXONOMIC GROUPS.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
